DIY Electrolyte Drink Recipe (Cheap, Clean, and Better Than Store Bought)

If you’re active, running, lifting, hiking, or just trying to stay hydrated throughout the day, electrolytes matter more than most people realize.

But here’s the thing. Most electrolyte drinks on the market are loaded with sugar, artificial dyes, and ingredients you probably don’t actually want in your body.

So I started making my own.

This DIY electrolyte mix takes about 10 seconds to make, costs a fraction of store-bought options, and gives your body exactly what it actually needs. Want to see my DIY electrolyte video? Scroll to the bottom.

No junk. No marketing fluff. Just the minerals your body uses.

My Simple DIY Electrolyte Mix

Here’s the exact ratio I use:

Mix this into a bottle of water and shake it up.

I use a clear Velomix blender bottle because it mixes everything really well and it’s easy to throw in my bag when I’m heading out the door.

Why These Ingredients Matter

Electrolytes help regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions, and nerve signaling. When you sweat during workouts, runs, or even just hot weather, you lose these minerals.

Replacing them helps with:

  • Hydration
  • Muscle recovery
  • Preventing cramps
  • Sustaining energy during workouts
  • Avoiding that drained, sluggish feeling

Celtic Sea Salt

This provides sodium and trace minerals your body loses through sweat. Sodium helps your body actually absorb and retain water, which is why plain water sometimes isn’t enough after intense activity.

Magnesium Malate

Magnesium plays a role in muscle recovery, energy production, and nervous system regulation. A lot of people are actually low in magnesium, especially if they’re active.

Potassium Chloride

Potassium helps regulate muscle contractions and fluid balance. It’s one of the main electrolytes lost through sweat.

How I Flavor Mine

You can keep it plain if you want, but I usually add something for flavor.

Some easy options:

  • Lemon or lime juice
  • A splash of cranberry juice
  • A little raw honey
  • Drink mix (dye free)
  • Sugar-free flavor packets if that’s your thing

It’s super flexible.

The Time-Saving Trick

If you’re using this daily like I do, you can pre-make batches.

Just grab small baggies or containers and portion out the ingredients ahead of time. Then all you have to do is dump one into your bottle and go.

It makes it ridiculously easy to stay consistent.

Why I Prefer This Over Store-Bought Electrolytes

Most electrolyte powders include:

  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Food dyes
  • Fillers
  • Excess sugar

When you make it yourself, you know exactly what you’re putting in your body.

It’s simple. It’s effective. And it’s cheap.

The Bottom Line

Hydration isn’t just about drinking water. It’s about replacing the minerals your body uses when you move, sweat, and push yourself.

This DIY electrolyte mix is one of the simplest things I’ve added to my routine, and it makes a noticeable difference in how I feel during runs, workouts, and long busy days.

Simple habits. Big impact.
